The Gallatin, Jefferson, and Madison Rivers all converge to form the Missouri River. The Missouri is the headwaters of three prominent fisheries in Southwest Montana, making it one of the largest rivers in the West. We fish the Missouri in the spring below Holter Lake, outside of Helena, when we have high densities of mayflies hatching, specifically Blue-Winged Olives and Pale Morning Duns. The Missouri’s massive biomass supports abundant trout populations.
